What to Expect on a Marlborough Wine Tour (From People Who Actually Work in the Industry)

03/07/2026 By Cameron Clarke

Guests sipping wines at Framingham Marlborough wineries

If you have never been on a Marlborough wine tour before, you might be picturing something a bit intimidating. Swirling glasses, technical talk about tannins, everyone nodding along. You might quietly wonder if you are supposed to know more than you do. Here is the truth: you do not need to know anything about wine to have a brilliant day on tour with us. You just need to show up curious.

What makes a Hop n Grape day different is who is guiding it. Our guides are not people who read up on wine as a hobby. They work in it. Some have poured in cellar doors, some have worked vineyard harvests, some know the winemakers behind the labels personally. That means you hear stories that are not rehearsed facts. You get the kind of things you only pick up from actually being part of the industry.

Before You Arrive

Comfortable shoes are the main thing to think about, since some stops involve a short walk through the vineyard rows. Marlborough weather can shift through the day, so bring layers even in summer. Add sunscreen and a hat if the sun is out. Cellar doors provide a glass of water throughout the day, so there is no need to bring your own. Beyond that, just come as you are. There is no dress code and no need to arrive with any wine knowledge at all.

Pickup and the First Winery

Your Marlborough wine tour starts with pickup from your accommodation in Blenheim or Picton, right on schedule. The drive out to the first winery is usually when the group starts to relax. Your guide starts setting the scene, giving you a feel for the region before you even step out of the vehicle.

At the first stop, guides set the scene for the day, talking you through the story of Marlborough and the wine industry here. They point out things most visitors would never notice on their own, the kind of details a guidebook simply cannot give you. It might be why a particular block of vines faces a certain direction, or a small detail about how the season’s weather shaped that year’s harvest. Later in the tour, there is usually a chance to walk through a few vineyard rows as well, giving you a proper feel for the land behind the wine.

How Tastings Actually Work

This is usually where first timers relax the most, once they understand how it works. You do not need to finish every glass. Tipping the rest into the spittoon is completely normal, and plenty of experienced wine people do exactly that throughout the day so they can stay sharp for the next tasting. Your guide will talk you through what to look for in each wine, from the aroma to the finish. There is genuinely no wrong way to taste. If you like it, you like it. If you do not, that is useful information too, and it helps your guide steer you toward wines you will enjoy at the next stop.

Lunch and the Afternoon

Lunch is a highlight for most guests. We split our visits between Saint Clair Vineyard Kitchen and Allan Scott Restaurant, both well loved spots right in the vineyards. After lunch, the afternoon usually continues with a couple more wineries, each with its own character. Depending on your tour, there may also be a stop at a chocolate factory to round things out.

Getting Home

By the time you arrive back at your accommodation, most guests feel relaxed and a little more confident about wine than they were that morning. Many are already talking about coming back to visit a favourite winery again. That is really the goal. Not to turn you into a wine expert in one day, but to give you a genuinely good time and a bit more understanding of what makes this region special.

Wairau River restaurant

A great restaurant and tasting room in the heart of the Marlborough wine region. One of the best things about booking a Marlborough Wine tour with Hop n Grape is that they take care of all the bookings. One of the most important bookings is lunch. We are lucky to have a great relationship with Wairau River and are lucky enough to visit them regularly for wine and lunch.

Pioneers of Wine and food

It was in 1978 when Phil and Chris Rose established their vineyards on the banks of the Wairau River. Now, all five Rose children are highly engaged to Marlborough and along with their partners are involved in the family wine business.

Tasting room tours with Hop n Grape

At Hop n Grape Wine and beer tours, we love to visit Wairau River both during the Marlborough wine tour with guests, and also on our days off with friends and family. This really shows the quality of the wine and the staff. Visitors to the region love the generous portions and quality of food. Locals love the atmosphere and the award winning wines.

The Wairau River Cellar Door and Restaurant and tasting room is one of Marlborough’s original wine tourism destinations which was successfully launched in 1991. It is an amazing place to visit.

The inside of the restaurant is beautiful and cosy, and the courtyard next to the vines is stunning. The entire place is neat with a fantastic setting and a friendly atmosphere.

Family Winemakers

The attention to detail both in terms of the quality of food and wine is exceptional. Today, it is being managed and run by the eldest daughter Pip Rose. Working with her are her younger sister Caroline Rose and her partner Tane Malcolm who are the head chefs. The menu focuses on fresh Marlborough ingredients and changes with the seasons.

Wairau River’s Cellar Door is the perfect place to taste the wide range of their award-winning wines and learn more about Marlborough and its grape growing history. The cellar door hosts are friendly and knowledgeable.

Marlborough, New Zealand

26/05/2020 By Cameron Clarke

  • What is it that makes the wines of Marlborough so distinctively exquisite?
  • Marlborough’s History
  • NZ’s Largest Wine region

It has been said that there is no wine anywhere in the world that tastes like the wine of Marlborough. The balance of extraordinary purity and intensity of flavours set around impressive aroma, distinctive fruit characteristics and appealing balanced acidity is superb. These are stylish, exciting wines that surprise and delight.

What is it that makes the wines of Marlborough so distinctively exquisite?

As with any of the great wine making regions of the world, the answer lies in a magical synergy of climate and soil, underpinned by our desire to express this unique terroir. Here in the north-eastern corner of New Zealand’s South Island, bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east and towering mountain ranges in the hinterlands to the north and south, a broad alluvial plain stretches from the coastline, gradually rising into narrow valleys with favourable northerly aspects. Ours is a diverse landscape of spectacular natural beauty and bounty.

Marlborough’s History

In past centuries Māori hunted Moa here and cultivated vast Kumara crops in the year round sunshine. Early European settlers established New Zealand’s pastoral industry on the fertile rolling downs of the river valleys. In 1873, long before the modern day vintners recognised the potential to produce great wine in this region, pioneering Scottish farmer and grape grower David Herd, planted Marlborough’s first vineyard.

It was to be another 100 years before that vision took root with the development of viticulture in Marlborough on a commercial scale.

NZ’s Largest Wine region

Today Marlborough is recognised as one of the premium wine regions of the world. New Zealand’s leading wine region. This region draws international acclaim that far outweighs its size. In the span of just a few decades winemakers have embraced this small, yet geographically diverse region, exploring the nuances offered by its landscape to craft exhilarating flavours in many different wine styles.

"I am a very novice wine drinker, often fearful of ordering wine at meals... This tour helped change that for me entirely. The first portion of the tour took us behind the scenes at a vineyard. We were explained the regional wines produced, how the plants are planted and harvested and finally how the grapes are processed for wine production. A very good starting point for myself..."
