Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Hop ‘n Grape different from the other tour companies?

We are Marlborough’s newest wine tour.  We have been running for 4 years. We’re aiming to be the best …  so let’s face it … we’ll try harder!

We offer a UNIQUE opportunity:  We are experts in the wine industry, your tour guide is a Winemaker, and will open doors to places you can’t go without one.

It’s more about what we are not. We will ‘not’ drop you at cellar doors and polish our windscreen while you sample.

How long is the Hop ‘n Grape Tour?

A tour runs for approximately 5.5 hours.

We pick you up from your accommodation at approx 10:30am in Picton and 11:00am in Blenheim.

We drop you off at your accommodation in Blenheim at approx 4:30pm, and Picton 5pm.  If you prefer we can leave you at a local restaurant/brewery to kick back and relax after your tour.

Please note:  Additional charge for Picton transfers of $40 per group does apply.

Is the Hop ‘n Grape flexible?

Yes.  Our tour is flexible, and can also include:

  • Lunch at a winery restaurant
  • An exclusive walk through the best native garden
  • Makana Boutique Chocolate Factory
  • Olive oil tasting

We consider specific requests from the group, and do our best to work in with your travel plans.  Just call 0800 GR8 TOUR (0800 468 868)  to discuss your options.

Can we have a private tour?

Sure can.  We will tailor your tour just for you, and work in with your schedule.  We will take a minimum of 2 people and up to 11 people on a private tour in our minibus.  Contact us for a quote.  Depending on your numbers this option can save you a few bucks, and you don’t have to compromise with others in the group!

Can the Hop ‘n Grape cater for cruise ships arriving in Picton?

Yes.  We can arrange a tour that works around your ship’s schedule.  Please contact us for a quote.

Can we bring the Kids?

This tour is generally unsuitable for children under the age of 12.  Providing they’re awesome, and we’ve got room in the van … “no worries mate”.  Otherwise call us to discuss a private tour for your family, so we can tailor your tour to be more child-friendly.

Do we need to have an understanding of wine to enjoy the tour?

No.  We educate your mind and palate before we ‘hop’ around the winery cellar doors.  This tour will leave you satisfied whether you know everything, something or nothing about wine.

How many wines will we sample?  Which wineries will we visit?

This depends on the group.  There are over 40 cellar doors , and we usually have time to visit 4-5 wineries plus a brewery (full day option).  You can sample 25-30 wines (that’s enough to make you feel completely satisfied at the end of your day).

Can we request a specific winery?

Yes. We consider specific requests from the group.  Be sure to tell your Winemaker/Tour Guide where you want to taste.  So long as we have time, and the winery has a tasting room, then we will do our best to get you there.  If you wish to have more control over your itinerary, then our private tour may suit you more.

Can we request a specific winery for lunch?

Yes.  If someone in the group has a desire to eat somewhere in particular, we will do our best to take you there.  Naturally we know the best spots to eat, so you can trust us to book you somewhere perfect!  With the nature of a group tour we need to consider the needs of the entire group.  Be sure to make your requests at the time of booking so we can reserve a table.

Do we have to eat lunch as a group?

Unless you are booking a private tour, then we usually encourage a group experience.  However, we don’t want to ruin your romantic get away either, so ask us at the time of booking to reserve you a separate table.

What do we need to bring on the tour?

Please wear/bring with you appropriate closed shoes (ideally no heels) for our winery cellar visit.  Also you’ll want to bring a camera, water bottle, your wallet, and a positive attitude!

Are there any extra costs?

Price includes all Wine and Beer Tasting fees, and collection from your accommodation (in Blenheim and Renwick areas).  Please note an additional charge of $40 per group applies to Picton/Havelock transfers.  You pay the cost of your own lunch, and any wine purchased on the day.

How do we get our wine back home?

We can arrange to ship wine home to most countries.  Wine in a bottle … is a bottle of memories, so why not take it home with you?!  If you are visiting from overseas please ask your winemaker/tour guide for more details at the start of your tour.

How do we pay?

We accept Visa or Master Card Debit and Credit cards. Full payment on the day of your tour.  We use FastPay.  Sorry no cheques please. Alternatively book and pay via our Book Now page.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand your travel plans may change.  If the situation arises that you need to cancel your tour with us.  We appreciate a minimum of 24 hours notice.  We will do our best to accommodate you, and can reschedule your tour for another day that suits you better.   For larger group bookings 5 days notice is required for any adjustment or cancellation of a tour.

On the rare occasion that Hop ‘n Grape Tours cannot run a scheduled tour, we will provide at least 24 hours notice, and you will be given the opportunity to reschedule.

If I drink too much can I sleep in your van?

No. Drink in moderation for a more awesome day!

Is the Hop ‘n Grape the best tour company for me?

That depends how much you appreciate the best things in life?!  You see… we are right for you!

Here’s What Our Customers Are Saying…

"Hop 'n Grape Tours was absolutely perfectly suited to what we wanted out of our day. We had a "behind the scenes tour" of a phenomenal winery, a fantastic lunch, and an insider's look at the wine business. Plus, we got to sample some premium microbreweries. I would highly recommend Cam and his company to any person or group that is looking for a top notch customer service experience."
- Robb, Colorado, USA

***

"What sets this tour apart from the others is a winery visit where you learn how wine is made and the different soils that characterise the unique wines grown in the region. Cam is a great host and gives you just the right amount of information. The tour is well paced and highly recommended"
- Clare, NZ

***

"I am a very novice wine drinker, often fearful of ordering wine at meals... This tour helped change that for me entirely. The first portion of the tour took us behind the scenes at a vineyard. We were explained the regional wines produced, how the plants are planted and harvested and finally how the grapes are processed for wine production. A very good starting point for myself..."

"My wife and I really enjoyed our tour with Cam on Hop 'n Grape tours! It was a very personalised experience for us. Getting to go to any winery that we wish and getting a great behind the scenes look at the Mount Riley winery was amazing. We would highly recommend hopping on board the tour... [for] a really knowledgeable and friendly guide. If you love wine, you'll love this tour!"
